Huemul Glacier Patagonia’s overlooked treasure

The Huemul Circuit | Swoop Patagonia

Just when you think Patagonia has shown you all its cards—Fitz Roy, Laguna Torre, endless peaks and valleys—Huemul Glacier quietly enters the scene. This short and scenic hike, located about 35 kilometers north of El Chaltén, is a hidden gem that's perfect for a rest day between the region’s more demanding trails.

The journey begins with a gravel road drive or a two-hour bus ride, which you can easily book through your hotel. The bus conveniently picks you up and drops you at the trailhead, where an entrance kiosk welcomes visitors to this privately owned area. The 10,000 ARS (~$9 USD) fee grants access to a serene trail through mossy forests, trickling waterfalls, and finally, a striking glacier-fed lake.

The hike itself is just 3 kilometers roundtrip with modest elevation gain, making it ideal for anyone seeking beauty without breaking a sweat. And while the main viewpoint is already impressive, a short ridge trail offers sweeping overhead views of the brilliant blue lake and glacier. Pack some snacks, bring bug spray, and enjoy this quiet corner of Patagonia that most travelers still haven’t discovered.
